  39. I am in the process of studying for a Tech-No code ham license (Hope 
  40. this doesn't turn some of you off from reading the rest of this
  41. message.  :-)  )
  42.  
  43. I will be driving to Texas in a few months and would like very much to
  44. take a HT with me (actually that is irrelevant as I might purchase a 
  45. mobile unit).  I would really like to be able to stay in touch
  46. with folks back here in NJ.  What band would you recommend to accomplish
  47. this, and is it possible on the freqs allowed with a tech-no code 
  48. license?

  80. Unfortunately, a lot of the information new hams need to understand just what
  81. all those knobs are doing on the front of those old transceivers is just not 
  82. around any more in any of the handbooks or introductory literature.  When I was
  83. "tooling up" for my general class license, I remember studying "Understanding 
  84. Amateur Radio" from the ARRL.  A real fine text that helped me understand
  85. just what what going on inside the box.  I'm not sure anything like that is 
  86. available any more.  All the new entrants can do is rely on the Elmers to help
  87. 'em out.

  700. The last school group contact was completed yesterday.  The Portsmouth HS 
  701. in Portsmouth, New Hampshire had a telebridge contact using stations in 
  702. California (Ralph Warner, N6MNN) and Texas (Bob Douglas, W5GEL).  The 
  703. students asked 5 questions during this bridge contact.

  705. Hams across the U.S. and around the world continue to work the Shuttle 
  706. Columbia on both voice and packet.  Moreover, the completion of school 
  707. group contacts has cleared several school backup passes for possible 
  708. general QSO opportunities.  While the SAREX Working Group cannot fully 
  709. guarantee availability, there is a high probability that the STS-58 crew 
  710. will be ready to take general calls over the continental U.S. on these 
  711. passes.  Two of these "scheduled" passes remain.  These include orbit 
  712. 178 at MET 11 days 1 hour 42 minutes (10/29 at 16:35 UTC) and orbit 192 
  713. at MET 11 days 22 hours and 29 minutes (10/30 at 13:22 UTC).  Please note 
  714. that the astronauts operated voice during yesterday's "scheduled" pass 
  715. which occurred on 10/27 at 14:59 UTC (Orbit 145).  Also note that hams on

  717. the ground heard or worked the Shuttle Columbia crew on several other orbits
